A personal message from Robert John Godfrey

It is a while since I last wrote to you all.  A lot has been going on at The Enid Home as we adapt to the uncertain future facing most professional bands.

I have learned over all these years that uncertainty often throws up unlooked-for benefits as well as unwanted setbacks.  A time came when I decided to make friends with “uncertainty” and find the courage to walk those unknown paths through the woods.

Once I had accepted that no one can expect to be happy all the time I began to find happiness in unexpected places. That was more than thirty years ago.  And here we are in uncharted territory, once again.

And Then There Were Three

The Enid is a unique band whose music will endure way beyond my lifetime; of that I am sure. With the current band members, we have regained a stability not seen since the 1980s because of the brotherly love that binds us.

Come walk with us.  Plans are afoot and there is much to do.

Yours as ever

Robert John Godfrey

A Little Gift For The Curious

A highly successful concert sponsored by The Enidi took place last October at The Met Theatre in Bury, Gtr Manchester to launch the band's new album U. Now there is more to come. A new studio album in conception and a series of shows in 2020

Robert John Godfrey talks about U below. Get U Here

by Robert John Godfrey

The way I compose is "evolutionary", in the sense that I begin with a vision of what I want to say without knowing how or when the music will come to me, or how it will develop over time. I take a walk in the woods and wait to see where that journey leads. The vision I started with was one of Britain at the time of composing, a vision of what goes on beneath the things people tell themselves and say to each other.

When you add to that, the music and personality of Jason Ducker, I can say that together we have been on a truly unpredictable path. For those that are interested in the psychological, the specially commissioned artwork is the key to what U is really all about.

A special thanks to all our fans who have stuck with us during a turbulent and uncertain period in our recent past.

God willing, there is much more to come.

On August 6th, 2017, fans flocked from around the world to celebrate the 70th birthday of The Enid’s legendary founder, Robert John Godfrey, held in Union Chapel, one of London’s most famous and hallowed live venues. The stained glass windows of the Chapel provided the perfect backdrop to the music of “one of the greatest composers this country has ever produced,” (Tommy Vance, on Radio 1’s Friday Rock Show)

RJG 70th front cover 1500 x 1500

The setlist was chosen by Robert John Godfrey, and featured many of his favourite songs and instrumental compositions from The Enid’s catalogue, spanning five decades; some of which had not been performed live in over thirty years.

RJG also treated his audience, or “fellow travellers”, as he addressed from the stage to a solo performance of his much-anticipated forthcoming album, HOMILY, from which he performed an excerpt during this show which is included exclusively on this album.

Backed by the next generation of Enid musicians, this is the sound of a reinvigorated Robert John Godfrey. The trio of lead guitarist Jason Ducker, keyboardist Zachary Bullock and drummer Dominic Tofield play with great subtlety and dexterity throughout.
