Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

This is a very interesting debate..... over the years i have tried just about everything possible to get my mates into The Enid's music.
My mates like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Yes, BJH etc...etc... but they've never quite joined the cause when it comes to The Enid. I even dragged a mate along to the Derby show last year and he said he really enjoyed it, but then he didnt follow that up by buying a CD at the merch stall. Why one wonders ?
Maybe the Enid's music is more 'serious' than any other band, but that's exactly why The Enid are so great ! They should never 'sell-out' just for popularity even though the tide seems against them often.
We should invest in 'progressive' music and not crap music.... that is Robert's own argument !!! So i would love to hear exactly where Robert stands on playing 'Wild Thing'.... is he saying that we should support 'progressive' music, but crap music is fine if its just for 'fun' ?! It seems like a contradiction.
Robert ????

Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

I can't quite see the occasional novelty song or a silly encore as concession to "crap music". I'd rather think of them being akin to The Last Night of the Proms, as an attempt to break down the barriers between different types of music, or attitudes towards music. I must confess that I find it difficult to consider music itself as being serious or a piece of music more serious than another. Undoubtedly there is music that more easily requires a "serious" approach from me as a listener, according to some personal preferences and principles, some of which I probably am not even consciously aware of, but that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the number of chords involved or the relative complexity of the musical score. I can imagine there being people who take their Wild Thing quite seriously indeed. Even if I don't like the song myself, it still is music, and every now and then it is good to be reminded that in the end all musical barriers are arbitrary and really of no consequence at all. I greatly appreciate every artist willing to acknowledge that, and to me The Enid performing (insert your own "crap" here) signifies just that. It's all just music.

I think it would do the band good to let off steam. Since last weekend numerous tracks as a potential cover have popped into my mind.... Thundebirds doesn't quite cut it unless it is for fun but one that has surfaced to the top and I think The Enid could do it serious justice is Crocketts Theme by Jan Hammer.

How about 10% off ticket prices for those of us who want to get a taxi home before the Enid embark on 'Wild Thing' ? :D

Nice idea Edwin, but i'd rather pay that 10% and hear a track written by The Enid :)

There's no escaping it, though... Should that happen, Wild Thing will be played to you on the taxi's radio.
