Only a few people have had the privilege of seeing a live performance by the enigmatic band The Enid, along with their leader Robert John Godfrey. That makes this live DVD even more welcome and exciting, filmed on the 16th April 2010 in Birmingham. On it, The Enid play the whole of their last studio album, “Journey’s End” as well as tracks from the classic “In The Region of The Summer Stars” and “Aerie Faerie Nonsense”. All of a sudden, there are five men on the stage who, apart from the grumpy-looking face of Robert John Godfrey, hardly anyone has ever seen before. The sound of “Terra Firma” however, which is somewhere between symphonic prog and the multi-vocal layering of a Beach Boys song, leaves nothing to be desired. “Terra Nova” sounds like a long forgotten Space Odyssey before you are immersed in the Alan Parsons-like cosmos of “Space Surfing”. This is essential prog with symphonic motifs gaining the upper hand. The cutting guitar also makes a massive contribution this success. As well as the fantastic light show. No question: The Enid live are a real quasi-esoteric experience for every true Prog fan. There’s been nothing like this since Mike Oldfield. A prog band which sounds like a classical orchestra. Founder member Francis Lickerish comes on stage for “Fand (2010 version), enhanced by the brass and percussion section of the Chandos Symphony Orchestra. Breathtaking.
In the interviews, the history of the band is told from the different viewpoints of the members. In particular, Godfrey talks about the next recording, which we can hardly wait for. This DVD fills an important historical gap for Prog listeners. Indispensible.
