This was going to be a bit longer but some more eloquent people have stolen my fire. Hey ho.

What The Enid means to me...

...walking home. Along the banks of the River Severn in Worcester in the early 80s. The Cathedral way in the distance. A fresh two-foot snowfall. Listening to 'Live At Hammersmith Vol I' on my Walkman and wishing it would never end. ( I took a 10 min detour to play out the album.)
Did it change my life? Probably.
Whatever your own personal way into The Enid they will provide you with at least one moment of surreal beauty. (And the rest.)
A result in anyone's book.

Stuart

(PS - TubaTim - think we were sat next to you - nice to meet you both.)

Hello and welcome to the forums! Hopefully not your first and last post. I know what you mean about Live at Hammersmith - not wanting it to end. A brilliant album. I'm wondering if last nights concert will become the "Live at Hammersmith" for the 2010's with the added bonus of "I was there!"

Re: Reviews

The sound mix last night was excellent, but markedly quieter than any previous occasion that I've seen the band live. Obviously they had to match the orchestra's sound level. Can someone who knows tell me how much of the band sound was going through the PA (which was tiny compared to last year's gig at the same venue). Dave Storey's drums seemed unmiked to me.

Is this the first post not to mention you know who?

I'm not sure Dave needs his drums miking up he hits them that hard! His drums certainly know they have been hit :D As to the other stuff no idea I'm afraid.

I was enjoying the show until that poet(?) bloke came on. It ruined the night for me, and I was close to walking out. I am not interested in the slightest in people's sexual orientation, and don't feel the need to be lectured.

I paid good money to attend and stay overnight in Birmingham and am now a bit fed up.

Re: Reviews

Am I missing something here? Yes it was an unmistakeable waste of ten minutes of my life, and the blot on an unforgetable evening of wonderful music, but, what gives it all the twist is...he ain't gay. Alan Moore has two kids and has been married twice. That's like Hannibal Lector lecturing on the benefits of vegetartianism

Re: Reviews

You are not missing anything. The piece was written as a riposte to the disgusting Clause 28 legislation proposed by the Thatcher govt. Plenty of people who are not gay found it repellant and said so.

Re: Reviews

I have to say I agree with much of what has been said earlier. Fand was phenominal! The Lovers was beautiful! Listening to the orchestra playing 'The Art Of Melody' with RJG looking on was a wonderful moment. But I just didn't get the Alan Moore piece. I was expecting a poem about love. I understood it might be 'controversial'. I knew that there may be parts I wouldn't understand. I was prepared for a piece of prose, not a jolly limerick. But I wasn't ready for a poorly executed piece of 'performance art'(?) that consisted basically of an angry history of homophobia. Like others, I found myself fidgeting uncomfortably as Mr Moore ranted at us for what seemed an eternity. My wife commented mid piece that she thought it was "inappropriate material, considering the ages of some of the youngsters present." She also said that she wasn't going to applaud Mr Moore (A decision I had already made for myself). She told me afterwards that she had wanted to walk out. Like others, In contrast to the euphoria of Fand, I felt a very uneasy tension in the air for a while after Mr Moore's piece that made it difficult to concentrate as the band launched into 'Journey's End'. Having said that, I felt it was wrong of people to heckle. Mr Moore has a right to his opinion, and the right to express that opinion. I just think it was unnecessary, possibly deliberately controversial piece which didn't belong. I only hope that when the press reviews are released, we won't find that the beautiful, majestic, powerful music of The Enid that so many of us love is contained in the last 3 or 4 lines of a piece about an angry poet.

Maybe he's confused anarchism with anachronism.
