The Enid into the Future - Part 3

I think it is now time for The Enid to add a new "fun cover version" to their repertoire, especially for encores. My proposed selection seems almost perfect for the band, and I'm certain it would go down a storm with British audiences and many abroad. I have found that as soon as you suggest to people that The Enid could do their own version of this track, they in their minds, know instantly what it would sound like. :D

What is this musical behemoth? Let's go back to the future....

FIVE!....
FOUR!...
THREE!....
TWO!....
ONE!....
....THE ENID ARE GO!!!!

Barry Gray's classic Thunderbirds March ( incorporating Aqua Marina from Stingray as additional middle section)

The track has high clap-along-ability factor
Very suitable for the Seraphim Trompetiers.
Lots of tub thumping work for Nic "tympani boy" Willes
When the Decibels are present they could sing the Aqua Marina section.

"It's so The Enid - they just don't know it"

I always really detested the 'fun', 'cover', 'gimic', 'novelty' singles or whatever you want to call them. They really make me cringe and they're not why i like the band. The Enid are soooooooooooooo much better than that and in my opinion should stick to the ground breaking, complex music i love.
I totally respect other people who have the opposite opinion though :)

Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

If i wanted to hear 'covers' then there's always the band at the local pub (who's name escapes me because they were so forgetable) or the local karaoke night ! Now, when WAS the last time i went to that local pub ?
You dont hear the CBSO playing 'Wild Thing' as an encore, so why should The Enid lower themselves to that level ?!
That said, i did like 'Nimrod' which i admit was a 'cover', but then Nimrod is a beautiful 'classic' piece of music, Wild Thing certainly isnt.
Sorry to be controversial, but it comes back to Robert's own argument about what is crap music !
Any piece that just contains three of the most basic chords repeated for three minutes (end of track), has no place in an Enid show :)

Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

I disagree here. People who don't know The Enid as we do might think them a little pompous and too serious. We know they're not, but others might think they are. The addition of an "Enidised" cover occasionally is something which I welcome to show the humour and lighten the mood.

We discussed this at length at the weekend video shoot and the 24 or so of us who were there have suggested a couple of songs for Enidisation for later on this year. Not saying which so as not to spoil the surprise, but with Joe on board I think these will go down a storm.

But as you say, each to his own. And I really do like the Thunderbirds idea.

Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

My problem is that i really dont like basic music. To me there's nothing clever in playing three basic chords over and over again (indeed i could do that myself !).
This surely is Robert's very point he made not so long ago, when he argued for people to invest in 'progressive' music, otherwise it will die out and we will be left with the crap.
Ok, i like pompous, i like serious, i like progressive, i like complexity..... i guess im just a snob when it comes to music !
Ps..... Genesis, Yes or Pink Floyd never played 'Wild Thing' as an encore !!! Their own music stood up on it's own without gimmicks.
Cheers !

The problem with doing the Thunderbirds theme is that there would be strings attached. ( Puppet Joke )

Yes, good one AlbionFair !! Perhaps the band could arrange to all have strings attached to their arms and legs when performing it ;)
Perhaps Hailey could be Lady Penelope too !

Re: The Enid into the Future - Part 3

Regarding the so called "novelty" tracks I think they are an ideal opportunity for the band to show that, whilst taking their own music seriously, they don't take themselves too seriously. What's wrong with having a bit of fun? It's not as if thes tracks make up a major part of the Enid catalogue.

So if there is a vote on the Thunderbirds theme, I vote yes. So long as they do Joe 90 as well obviously!
